CLEVELAND LAKEFRONT DESIGN COMPETITION

Intention: Vibrant intersections of programmatic hems and the Lake Erie shoreline.

A successful Lakefront will host layers of potential and actual simultaneous activity.  The absence of simultaneous purpose will render the Lakefront sterile. An activated Lakefront does not necessarily involve large expanses of open space — our proposal advocates a proportional balance of open space and built fabric. Civic space is not open space. Civic space is active space.

A variety of activities will be generated by the intersection of the programmatic hems and the neutral lakefront spaces at the water’s edge. The hem’s thematic presence at the shoreline will engender a differentiating Lakefront space, related to the dominant program. Through generous spacing of the hem intersections, a rhythm of active, specific lakefront space, and neutral connective spatial tissue will be produced.
